Abstract

The study on the water quality of the Chorreras River in the Veracruz parish, Pastaza Canton, reveals significant findings regarding the lack of monitoring and assessment of the aquatic ecosystem in the region. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the water quality of the Chorreras River in the Veracruz parish, Pastaza Canton, and province, by calculating diversity and biological indices for the monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrates. The study methodology involved two phases: fieldwork and laboratory analysis. During the field phase, sampling was conducted at seven points along the Chorreras River using the Surber net method to collect benthic macroinvertebrates. In the second phase, the collected specimens were identified and analyzed in the laboratory using taxonomic identification keys and calculating biological indices such as BMWP/COL and EPT. A total of 168 individuals were identified at the seven sampling sites, corresponding to 3 classes, 9 orders, and 18 families. The results indicate that the water quality of the Chorreras River is acceptable according to the BMWP/COL index, although the EPT index suggests a regular quality, indicating slight contamination. Subtle differences in macroinvertebrate diversity were observed between the sampling points, attributable to the river's geography and the various land uses in its basin. The presence of arboreal vegetation correlates positively with macroinvertebrate diversity, while human intervention, such as livestock farming and fish farming, was associated with a decrease in diversity.
