Biogeographic analysis of Amphisbaena bassleri, Vanzolini, 2002

Abstract

The Amphisbaenidae are very little studied reptiles mainly due to their fossorial habit and the difficulty to be sampled. Amphisbaena bassleri, Vanzolini, 2002 is a recently evolved species that has adapted to live in very humid environments and the only species of this genus that has shown swimming behaviors. The present study aimed to perform a biogeographical analysis of the species Amphisbaena bassleri to determine the bioclimatic and physical limits of the species distribution. For this purpose, the geographic distribution was updated and the species' range was mapped by the areographic method, following the process proposed by Rappoport and Monjea (2001). The distribution area of A. bassleri distribution was characterized, and the climatic limits were described with the help of thematic mapping obtained from the worldclim2 database for the years 1970-2000 published in 2017 and physical (soil) based on soil mapping from the FAO database. The results show a discontinuous distribution area located mainly over the ecoregion of Humid Forests of the western Cordillera Real in which there are some important urban areas of Ecuador. The species is distributed in a range of 15 °C to 27 °C annual average. The highest temperature of the warmest month (BIO 5) that the species tolerates is 35 °C. Precipitation from 1211 mm/year to 4300 mm/year. They prefer cambisol soils.
