Diversity of epiphytic and epilithic diatoms in the Aguas Blancas River, Triunfo dos enclosure, Sucumbíos province, Ecuador

Abstract

The Aguas Blancas River in the province of Sucumbíos is influenced by agricultural and livestock activities, which could alter the diversity of diatoms. Despite its ecological importance, there are no taxonomic studies in the area. The present study sought to determine the diversity of epilithic and epiphytic diatoms in the Aguas Blancas River, to analyze the inter- and intra-population variability of species and varieties of diatoms collected at five sampling stations along 1.3 km during October, November and December 2023. Samples were collected from scraping rocks and macrophyte roots and processed in the laboratory with 30 % hydrogen peroxide. A total of 6000 individuals and 168 species of diatoms were identified, with Navicula tripunctata (Ai%=4.85) as the most abundant, indicating contamination in the river. Diversity was high, with high dominance and a homogeneous community, on the other hand inter- and intra-population variability depended on their morphological and meristic characteristics. The similarity analysis with the Bray-Curtis index divided the stations into three groups, where group one (stations P2RAB and P5RAB) presented a similarity of 60 % of shared species, while group two (P3RAB and P4RAB) with 58 % of diatom species and group three was formed by station P1RAB with 53 %. In conclusion, the high diversity is attributed to the contribution of nutrients from agricultural and livestock activities.
