Diversity of epilithic diatoms in the Estero Orienco in the Lago Agrio canton Sucumbíos province

Abstract

This study was conducted in the Estero Orienco, located in the province of Sucumbíos, Canton Lago Agrio, city of Nueva Loja, due to the lack of information and lack of studies, the objective was to determine the diversity of epilithic diatoms. The collection of samples was carried out in eight points, during the months of November, December 2022 and January 2023, for the field phase a scraping of the biofilms of the rocks was performed, to later clean them with 30% hydrogen peroxide, then the samples were sealed with naprhax, which allowed the taxonomic identification in the Cnoptec microscope under a 1000x magnification. The results obtained were 2400 specimens, 18 families and 22 genera. Nitzschia palea, Pinnularia saprophila, Luticula goeppertiana and Gomphonema parvulum stood out in the three sampling periods. A normal value range for diatom species diversity was determined by Shannon-Weiner index analysis. In the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test, a correlation of P>0.66 was obtained, i.e. it is a non-significant value in terms of richness in the sampling points. The cluster analysis determined similarities in terms of species at the sampling points with a range from 95 % to 65 %. As a conclusion, it is determined that there is morphological biodiversity according to their similarity with each other.
