Comunicational análisis of the Wayusa Upina ceremony in the organization of originary peoples of the Kichwa nationality, Santa clara-Pastaza canton

The article examined the ancestral Wayusa Upina ceremony, a central practice for the Kichwa community of Santa Clara canton in the Amazon region of Ecuador. The research focused on identifying and analysing the communicational elements of this ceremony, with particular attention to the structure and function of the ritual symbols used during the morning ritual. The ceremony not only symbolised a spiritual connection with ancestors and nature but also proved fundamental to the transmission of knowledge and the preservation of Kichwa cultural identity. The findings indicated that the symbols were crucial to cultural communication. These symbols, which encompassed ritual practices, symbolic actions, and organisational structures, formed a system of meaning that facilitated the transmission of ancestral values and knowledge. The semiotic analysis revealed how these symbols were structured and performed specific functions in the communicative process of the ritual, contributing to cultural cohesion and identity. However, the study also uncovered significant challenges related to the declining understanding and appreciation of ritual symbols among younger generations. This lack of appreciation could threaten the continuity of the tradition and the effectiveness of cultural transmission. It was recommended that educational strategies be implemented, and digital media utilised to strengthen young people’s connection to their cultural practices. In conclusion, the symbols of the Wayusa Upina ceremony proved essential to the preservation of Kichwa cultural identity, and it was deemed crucial to enhance understanding among younger generations to ensure the continuity of these traditions.
