Abstract

The productive performance of white Pelibuey sheep was evaluated under a management strategy in a coastal ecosystem in southeastern Cuba. A system based on alternate rotational grazing was applied with 80 breeders, giving priority to breeders close to parturition and those already lambing within 30 days. These animals rotated in the Maternity Paddock, with low stocking rate, improved grasses, creeping and shrubby legumes, natural shade; lambing was housed up to 60 days of age; lamb-breeding grazing together between 60-120 days of age; supplementation was performed with protein plants, Cenchrus purpureus, pre-dried and ground in a 20:80 ratio. Reproductive indicators were determined: birth rate, prolificacy, birth weight (BW); health indicator: lamb mortality; growth indicators: weaning weight (WW), of 10-month-old males (LW-10m), of 12-month-old females (LW-12f), and of sows (LW-S). Singleton births were more common in PN. A 78% birth rate was reached; 1.2 pups/birth; 2.6 kg BW; 13.7 kg WW; 32.2 kg LW-10m; 27 kg LW-12f; 30 kg LW-S first birth; 34.6 kg other births; 1.2% pup mortality. It is concluded that, with the management strategy employed under coastal ecosystem conditions, sheep breeding is optimized with reproductive, health and growth indicators close to reference values for Cuban Pelibuey sheep.
