Analysis of women's participation in tourism activities at the Ila Kucha Community Tourism Center, Orellana Province, Ecuador

Tourism activity is as ancient as humanity itself, and over the years, it has been evidenced that female participation has been active and significant. According to data presented by the World Tourism Organization, women represent at least 54 % of the workforce in this sector. This study focused on analyzing the participation of the female gender in the tourist activities developed at the Ila Kucha community tourism center, located in the Francisco de Orellana canton. To do this, specific objectives were proposed aimed at diagnosing the current situation of the tourist center, as well as identifying the role played by women in it. The methodology adopted in the research has a qualitative approach, supported by intentional non-probabilistic sampling and data collection techniques such as participant observation and interviews. Among the most relevant findings, the contribution of the community tourism center to the cultural and sustainable development of the community stands out, as well as its contribution to the preservation and conservation of culture through dance, gastronomy, and handicrafts made by the Kichwa women of the territory, this being their main role within the tourist center. The study concludes that Kichwa women face organizational, family, and communication challenges with other members of the community and tourists, so it is necessary to establish strategies for female labor empowerment and promote new spaces for female participation in this community tourism center.
