Proposal for agro-industrial development on the “El Arbolito” farm

Abstract

The growing need to harness raw materials in low-industrialization contexts, such as conventional agriculture, requires to be integrated agroindustrial development models that strengthen productivity, diversify the rural economy, and ensure environmental sustainability. The objective of this research was to develop a proposal for agroindustrial development on the "El Arbolito" farm, located in the Teniente Hugo Ortiz parish, Pastaza canton, due to its dependence on unprocessed raw materials and traditional use of productive land. The methodology included system delimitation, a diagnosis of the current state of the systems, a ranking of raw materials and products, and the design of a technological route. The results revealed that 59.10% of the farm's land area (23.4% agricultural, 33.31% forestry, 1.89% livestock, and 0.17 % agroindustrial) is used, while 40.90% remains unused. The ranking determined the Chinese potato as the crop with the greatest potential due to its availability, production area, and adaptability, with possibilities for transformation into flour, starch, biofilm, snacks, animal feed, and ethanol. Other relevant resources include sugarcane, bananas, corn, and livestock byproducts, such as manure, which are integrated into composting, anaerobic digestion, and biofertilizer production processes. The designed technological route promotes the circular economy by utilizing byproducts, reducing waste, and closing production cycles. It is concluded that implementing this model would enable diversification of production, utilize underutilized areas, reduce dependence on external inputs, and consolidate a sustainable production system.
